Their low profile means that storms regularly engulf them, and there is often little shade from the powerful sun. Marine life and birds make ready use of atolls, and though humans have inhabited some, atolls are often hostile for larger land animals. Atolls are akin to oases, in that they are often the only points of land in hundreds of square miles of pelagic expanse. You can access strategic or luxury goods within your border, but cannot work tiles. In hexagon (5-6) Civ games, you can work 3 tiles away. In square or isometric (1-4) Civ games, you can work 2 tiles away except the 4 corners. Atolls are one of the most common island types in the Pacific, the other being islands of volcanic origin. The maximum limit is five tiles, but thats for very large, isolated (more resorces) cities and usually your capital. Atolls are typically ring-shaped, encompassing a central shallow lagoon, and the islands are typically low and small. ![]() In Brave New World, the unique ability of the Japanese gives them an additional bonus yield of +2 Culture from Atolls.Īn atoll is a formation of coral which creates an island. ![]() Note, however, that they aren't considered a resource, so they don't get additional benefits! ![]() Coast tiles containing Atolls benefit from the Lighthouse's +1 Food bonus. ![]()
